Totakura Papu (Khatti Dal) – From the kitchen of Pinky Reddy

Ingredients

  • 1 cup red gram dal / tuvar dal
  • 4 tomatoes
  • 1 big onion
  • 1 bunch totakura leaves
  • 3 cups of water
  • 5-6 green chillies
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of turmeric
  • 10 grams tamarind / imli
  • For Seasoning:

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 6 cloves of garlic
  • ½ tsp fenugreek seeds / methi
  • 4 stems of curry leaves
  • 1 onion
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds / jeera
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds / rai
  • Method

  • Wash the leaves and dal well.

  • Mix dal, cut leaves, green chillies, cut tomatoes, cut onions, imli, turmeric,and add 3 cups of water then boil.

  • Heat the oil, add urad dal, methi, jeera, rai, garlic, onion and curry leaves. Cook for a minute, add the dal in the seasoning, and then cook for 2-3 minutes.

  • Add salt to taste.
