Hyderabad is a centre for rich textiles ranging from Ikat, Upadda, Mangalgiri, Venkatagiri, Garhwal, Khadi, Kalamkari, Tibarumal and so on.

Ikkat

Ikat, or Ikat, is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employs a resist dyeing process on the warp fibres, the weft fibres, or in the rare and costly ‘double ikat’ both warp and weft, prior to dyeing and weaving. In ikat, the resist is formed by binding bundles of threads with a tight wrapping applied in the desired pattern. The threads are then dyed.

The bindings may then be altered and the thread bundles dyed again with another color to produce elaborate, multicolored patterns. When the dyeing is finished the bindings into cloth.

In other resist-dyeing are removed and the threads are woven techniques such as tie-dye and batik, the resist is applied to one face of the woven cloth, whereas in ikat the threads are dyed before weaving, and both faces are essentially identical in appearance.

Uppada Jamdani

UppadaJamdani Sari is a silk sari style woven in Uppada of East Godavari district.The name Jamdani in the UppadaJamdani Sari is a Persian terminology, in which Jam means flower and Dani means Vase.
Weavers use pure silver zari often dipped in melted gold with finest silk.

Mangalagiri Sarees

Mangalagirisarees are made of pure and durable cotton and are exclusive to the Mangalagiri region in the Guntur district. The fabric is woven on pit-looms from combed yarn by warp and weft interlacing. The Nizam design boarder is a very special characteristic of the saree.

Venkatagiri Sarees

Venkatagirisarees are known for their fine weaving. They date back to as early as 1700 and were mostly woven for royal women and zamindars. The looms used in venkatagiri are mostly pit looms. Pit looms are looms which are fixed at the ground level and there is a pit in which the loom’s pedal is placed. The weaver will sit on the floor and use her hands and legs to weave.

Gadwal Sarees

Gadwalsarees consist of cotton body with silk pallu with intricate traditional designs. The Brahmostsavas of Tirupati begins with the Gods idol being adorned with GadwalSaree.

The local weavers are talented and weave the 5.5 meters of saree fabric in such a way that it can be folded down to the size of a small match box. Gadwal Sarees have been very popular since the 1930s. These are cotton sarees with an attached silk border and silk pillow.

Dharmavaram Sarees

Dharmavaram Sarees are somewhat similar to Kanchipuram Sarees of Tamilnadu, yet the muted colours, the double shades create a total different effect.

NarayanpetSarees

There is a distinct style attached to the Narayanpet Sarees, the sarees have a checked surface design with embroidery and the border or pallu have intricate ethnic designs such as a temple. The borders and pallu of the Narayanpet Silk saree are given a contrasted look with small zari designs.

Chirala

Chirala was once known as “Small Mumbai”, due to huge varieties of sarees found here in comparison with the availability of sarees in Mumbai. This town is also famous for exporting hand made cloths. Chirala silk sarees are also very famous.

Kalamkari

Kalamkari or Kalamkari is a type of hand-painted or block-printed cotton textile, produced in parts of India and in Iran. The word is derived from the Persian words ghalam (pen) and kari (craftsmanship), meaning drawing with a pen (Ghalamkar).

There are two distinctive styles of kalamkari art in India – one, the Srikalahasti style and the other, the Machilipatnam style of art.
