Tamarind Mustard Rice – From the kitchen of Parvathi Badiga

Ingredients

  • Rice – 1/4 kg
  • Bengal gram – 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Chilli powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Tamarind paste – 2 tbsp
  • Ground nuts – 1tbsp
  • Grated ginger – 1/2 tsp
  • Green chilli -4
  • Red chilli -4
  • Mustard powder – 1 tsp ( can be adjusted acc to taste )
  • Curry leaves
  • Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Jaggery – 1/2 tsp
  • Hing- 1/4 tsp
  • Method

  • Can use mustard oil ( if strong mustard flavour is needed) or can use sesame oil .

  • Heat oil add all above ingredients except ginger and Bengal gram and fry for 5 mins till tamarind paste is cooked. Keep aside

  • Soak Bengal gram and rice separately for 1 hour.

  • Add Bengal gram to boiling water and cook for approx 6 mins then add rice and cook it together.
  • Cook rice. Make sure it’s not too soft. Keep aside .
  • Mix the tempering with the rice and add grated ginger.
