Sambhar

Sambhar – From the kitchen of Pinky Reddy

Serves 6 people

Sambar
Ingredients

  • 200 grams red gram dal/tuvar dal
  • 200 grams Sambhar kheera / kachar
  • 2 Drumsticks
  • 100 grams small baby onions/ 1 big onion
  • 1 Tomato
  • 1 small piece of ginger
  • 2 green chillies
  • 10 grams tamarind
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • Sambhar powder (Everest)
  • 1 tsp Sugar/ Jaggery
  • 1 Sprig of curry leaves
  • 1 pinch of Asafoetida/Hing
  • ½ tsp Cumin Seeds
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds/rai
  • 1 tsp of grated coconut

Method

  • Wash & boil the tuvar dal in a pressure cookers oth 1/2 ltr water
  • Boil peeled and cut sambhar kheera , carrots and 2 inch pieces of drumsticks.
  • Soak tamarind in water for 10 minutes, mash and remove the juice
  • Heat the oil; add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, hing,green chilly, baby onions or cut onions and tomato ..add red chilli powdered, salt, sugar, sambhar masala…to this add the boiled vegetables, tamarind water and the dal…Reduce the stove flame and cook for 5-6 minutes.
  • Add cut coriander leaves.

Note:You can even add 1 tsp of grated coconut in the sambhar.

  • 100gms Carrots
  • 100 grams small baby onions/ 1 big onion
  • 50 gms tamarind
  • 1 Tomato
  • 2 green chillies
  • Sambhar powder (Everest)
  • 1 tsp Sugar/ Jaggery
  • 1 Sprig of curry leaves
  • 1 pinch of Asafoetida/Hing
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds/rai
  • 1/2 red chilli powder
